What is the Laurelhurst Dance Club?
We are a member-supported, couples-only dance club made up of friendly people who like to dance.
What kinds of dance are the Club’s specialties?
We primarily dance ballroom styles, including swing, waltz, foxtrot, rumba, cha-cha, tango, salsa, and more.
Do I have to be a good dancer to join?
Not at all! You just have to enjoy dancing. Our members’ abilities vary widely, but everyone supports each other in a fun environment.
How many dances does the Club hold each year?
Traditionally, there have been about 17, all but one featuring live music (the other with a DJ), but the decision each year is up to the Board of Directors.
What does it cost to become a member?
This year’s dues are just $400 per couple. (The cost is prorated based on when your join.) That’s about $23 per couple per dance!
What if I don’t have a significant-other?
That’s fine! Many of our members are simply couples who enjoy dancing together, married or not.
What are members asked to do?
Besides paying their dues, members are asked to co-host one dance per year with other member couples. This includes helping with the decorations and refreshments. “Rookies” are paired with experienced couples who know the ropes.
Does the Laurelhurst Club offer dance classes?
Yes! These are open to the public, but aimed at encouraging new members and providing a chance for existing members to sharpen their skills.
What is the Laurelhurst Club’s dress code?
Each dance has a recommended dress code, sometimes along a theme (such as Sock Hop or Hawaiian Luau). This coming year, four of our dances will be formal (tuxedos or dark suits for men and formals or party dresses for women). The remainder of our dances are either business casual (no jeans, t-shirts, or tennis shoes) or theme specific.
How do I join?
We are a membership-only dance club. You may attend up to two dances as our guest before applying for membership. To attend one of our dances as a guest contact our Membership Chairperson, Mary Ann Hubbard at 503-206-4076 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
